It's a drizzly May night and the drive from Nambour to Noosa, which is never short, feels worse at night. However, I have to say that the Villa Noosa is a pretty damn awesome venue (apart from the poles blocking the view from the back). It's a decent turnout tonight, which is testamount to the venue putting on free shows along with bigger touring acts.
I'm way out of comfort zone tonight, as I know absolutely no-one here, so I guess I'm the token weird guy at the back on his own tonight.
The Secret Whisper are up first. I love seeing female-fronted rock bands, especially when done well, but I hate drawing obvious comparisons to bands like Paramore. These guys and gal produce a pop-tinged alternative rock sound. They actually remind me a little of Brisbane band Nina May. The guitars aren't too chuggy but not overly jangly either, the rhythm section is solid and relatively chunky, and the vocals courtesy of Jessica are melodic and sweet with a hint of attitude. They don't just stand there staring at their feet, playing their instruments either, with the band showing strong stage presence. The use of keys into the mix for the softer songs adds an extra element to their sound, but it did get a little lost in the mix.
Hayden Hack Infusion are on second. I think it's a strange place to put them. They're such a tight band, and the reggae grooves are flowing smoothly, but honestly, I would've put them first to warm everyone up. No band likes to go first, but someone's got to do it. Their music makes you want to sit back, have a drink with mates, nodding to the grooves and laughing & smiling about good times.
Talking to a few people and I hear that apparently the guitarist for Wolfmother is in the house, and Grinspoon were in nextdoor having dinner earlier.
The Strange Few cap off the night with their psychedelic rock. I can see the sideburns from the back of the venue. You've got to love the little tangents this band goes on during their songs. They'll be in a solid 60s rock groove then break into some jazz timing, or swing out. They have such a big sound for a three-piece.
Music lovers on the Coast need to take advantage of the free shows Villa Noosa put on. The more support they get, the more bands they will bring in.
