Rohan Nitschke @ The Kings Beach Tavern, December 11th.

This was actually a three-band bill at the Kings Beach Tavern, which has started to get on a roll putting on decent live bands on a weekly basis (hell, they had the legendary Suicidal Tendencies there the week before). However, since I'm a working man (stuck working on a Saturday shift for a month), I only had the time to stick around and catch Rohan Nitschke's set, which I was there to see regardless. The other two bands on the bill were The Rambling Van, and Coast favourites The Floating Bridges (whom The Point has reviewed a few times before, we know they're good).

In typical Rohan fashion, before he hits the stage he admits he's half-baked, half-pissed and in fine form. This carries on to when he gets on stage.

Kicking off as per usual with a dirty, groove version of the old blues tune, 'Crossroads', he quickly gets into the swing of things.

Everytime I see him love, his performance is livelier and he's more and more comfortable, working with the audience with a bit of banter between the songs, preaching the word of Sunshine Coast live music.

Rev. Rohan follows up with one of his originals, and then an Ash Grunwald cover ('Take the Drop') which ups the tempo a bit.

Tonight, he's road-testing a few songs which were freshly baked that day (one of which was written that afternoon).

Given that this is the first times he's played these songs live, they have gone down pretty well.

After another cover of an Ash Grunwald tune, Rohan brings out another of the newies which has a dirty, swamp blues feel. He's digging it (though I get the sense of relief that he's managed to pull it off that well) and the crowd are getting off on this new song.

Changing mood slightly, he brings out a chilled version of legendary guitarist Jeff Lang's songs, but the relaxed, quietened down vibe is short-lived when Rohan cranks out 'Walking Home Blues'. This song always grabs the crowd's attention, due to the honest, funny rendition of an experience Rohan had while out on a night on the drink. Basically - those that know where Carter Rd in Nambour is, plus walking up that drunk, would know the difficulty Rohan faced. The thing is though, everytime Rohan performs this song live, it changes every time, which makes it even more amusing.

Closing with favourite, 'Monster', funnily enough another song "about drinking piss and making a dickhead out of myself".

Rohan's passionate about local music and so should you.

There's so much talent on the Coast, and Rohan's and example of that.
