I hadn't actually heard of Scott before I saw his performance at one of the Alternative Nights at Hotel Maroochydore recently. I was blown away by his set, his amazing vocal ability and his control over the dynamics of his voice AND his guitar at the same time.
After a quick chat, he handed me this CD, Against The Night, and it's been on high rotation at The Point HQ since.
This offering is actually a live recording, which definitely adds to the atmosphere of Scott's sound. The quirky pieces of interaction between Scott and the audience make for interesting interludes between the songs.
Instead of smacking you hard with something brash, Scott's approach with the opener track, Amy is a slow-burning, emotional piece, but somehow feels comfortable. There's a knack to that, and Scott nailed it.
From there on in, Scott and his backing band mix it up, bringing some grinding funk and some lighter alt/indie stylings.
What's great about this album, due to it being a live recording (and bloody well mixed too) is that you get a true feel for Scott's vocal and songwriting abilities. I would compare his voice to an interesting blend of Jeff Buckley and Jason Mraz, with good ol' Aussie cheekiness thrown in for good measure.
There's an added bonus CD that comes with Against the Night - Colour of Sound is a great little 5 track promo disc.
Scott's going back into the studio shortly, so if you do get the chance to see him live, do so, and grab this disc.
