Dunsinane are another great example of the new breed of Indie/Alternative bands that are breaking through the scene on the Sunshine Coast/Brisbane. The genre, more closely related to say the Melbourne scene, is really starting to pump out some great young bands, and Dunsinane are at the forefront.
Their EP, Royal Blood , is a solid release. It's nicely mixed, with great tones from the guitars, though the drums sound just a little too gentle/soft for me. From their sound, I was getting some serious Temper Trap vibes, but also could sense they wanted to get into darker Indie territory, along the likes of Bloc Party, hence why I think the drums could sound just that little harsher - add some grit to the sound.
The real little treat that comes out of nowhere is the light, boppy track, Mangoes. Its cute little guitar riff, the boppy drums, and the light vocals has a real Vampire Weekend feel to it. Definitely a dancing track, and it sits nicely in the middle of the EP.
The ambient track, Paper Crown, only lulls you into a softer place, before the band close with rockier This Island.
All in all, it's a tidy EP that gives a great indication to the band's sound - a slickly produced CD showing off clever Indie songwriting chops.
Just wished they made the drums a little heavier. - Rooster |
