Cleveland Blues & The Red Eye Junction, Down By The Apple Tree

For a 2-piece band (with occasional guests), Cleveland Blues & The Red Eye Junction pump out a heavin, monster of a sound, thanks to the dynamics sparking between Cleveland himself and drummer, Bam Bam.

The production on this long player, courtesy of local producer Brian Goodworth, is solid and thick, and is very close to capturing the raw power this band is more than capable of putting out in their live sets.

From obvious starter track, ‘The Intro’ which blends into awesome stomper, ‘The Tellerman’, you get their sound straight away. The full-sounding, yet easily identifiable twang of Cleveland’s Resonator slide guitar and his raspy vocals, backed sublimely by Bam Bam’s quite technical blues-style drumming grabs you right away.

Yes Bam Bam is a chick, but damn this girl can hit the skins as hard, if not harder than some more established metal drummers around.

The title track belongs on high rotation, and must be played loud in Summer, after 5pm, with a beer in your hand and sitting on your deck/patio/doorstep. It’s a song that will get your head nodding, feet tapping and a grin on your face.

‘Let’s Dance’ will invoke a ho-down at high volume, so best be sure you’ve got your dancing boots on when this track comes on. The guitar riff and the drum patterns in this song will stick inside your head and you’ll be humming the melody for days.

Need a theme song for your ute? Cleveland’s got it covered with ’52 Pick Up’, and by the end of it, you can almost taste the dust from doing imaginary doughnuts in the dust.

‘Of Wood’ slows it down with a dirty groove, and then ‘& Stone’ brings it all back nice and short.

If you’ve seen Cleveland Blues & The Red Eye Junction live before, than there’s a good chance you already have this album, but if you don’t, definitely grab it, as one listen will transport you to their live shows (in your head anyway).

This is an awesome release from another one of the bringers of nu-blues on the Sunshine Coast.

Rooster.
