December 2009
31/12/09
Ok, this is a bit shit. It looks like the good ol' Sands Tavern has become another notch in the whingers' campaign to kill live music on the Sunshine Coast. This IS NOT OFFICIAL, but The Point has learned from a few unnamed sources now that the Sands will be stopping Live Music AND Uni Nights. Just. Great. Not to fear though, as Live@The Rolling Rock is still, to pardon the pun, rolling, with some more dates announced (but yet to be confirmed). The Sunshine Coast DOES need another venue on the Southern End to put up their hands, say F*CK YOU to the complainers and keep the live music scene pumping. Any takers?
A little word from Pine Cone Throat today that new Dead Kelly material has been worked on in true Dead Kelly fashion (if you get the drift).
Former Sunshine Coast, now Sydney-based DJ, Ryzer has told The Point that he's begun work on his first full-length album, so we're definitely looking forward to that.
Now, a huge HAPPY NEW YEAR to all you The Point followers, and if you're looking for things to do tonight -
The All White New Years Eve Party at Kunda Park starts from 8pm featuring DJs Ryzer, Cloneboy and more. $30 to get in. Details on the gig page.
For more family-friendly settings, head to Mooloolaba Beach where bands such as Take Anthia and Drawcard support The Black Sorrows and Kate Miller-Heidke. This is free and should be on now.
If you're reading this on your mobile while up at Woodford, go check out Rohan Nitschke play in the Chai Tent tonight, and sing along to Walking Home Blues (wish I bought some new shoooooes, I got the Walkin Home Blues).
29/12/09
The Ailment have posted a new video up on their myspace page...sounds pretty brutal.
Also on the heavier side of things, if you haven't checked out Wingspan's new songs yet, go have a listen at their myspace (click here)
A huge good luck to all the Coast muso's up at Woodstock...sorry, Woodford Folk Festival. We know The Floating Bridges and Rohan Nitschke will be soaking up the atmosphere, but there are plenty of other talented artists up there.
Currently compiliing viewers' thoughts of the best bits of The Point in '09 for the Best Of podcast this week. If you have something to contribute, email it through.
28/12/09
It's been a while, but The Ailment finally have a show announced on the Coast. They're playing the Black Box in Nambour with The Bride, and In Hearts Wake, on January 29th, from 5pm.
Keep posting votes for Dead Letter Circus' "The Space on the Wall" on JJJ's Hottest 100. Got more than one email address? Good! Use them all.
27/12/09
Navaho Joe have been added to The Point's database. Normally, we don't put Covers bands up on The Point (as they get heaps of work regardless), but with these guys we've made an exception. Dubbed 'one of the hardest working covers bands on the Sunshine Coast', these guys are in demand. They're playing tonight at Live@The Rolling Rock.
Quizmical from The Lady Throat Killers has sent through some gig info for a massive Aussie Hip Hop show at the Jubilee Hotel in Brisbane on January 25th. Huge line-up including The Winnie Coopers. For the full details, head to the Gigs page.
The Point will be putting together a montage/best-of Podcast this week, so if anybody has their favourite The Point moments of 2009, email them through, before Wednesday (please).
26/12/09
Don't forget - Live@The Rolling Rock at Noosa tomorrow night featuring Tranzluzid, Navaho Joe, and Forms of Recreation. Starts at 7pm and it's $5.
Hung out with DJ Ryzer (ex-Sunshine Coast, now Sydney-based) last night, celebrating his 30th Birthday, so The Point wishes a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Ryzer. He told The Point he's pretty damn excited about the NYE All White Party at Kunda Park next week.
Those that haven't voted in the JJJ Hottest 100 yet, don't forget to put a vote in for Dead Letter Circus's 'The Space on the Wall'. Let's try and get Licka (drummer for DLC) into the top 10 at least. Hell, you get to make up to 10 votes, so there's plenty of room to put a sly vote in for DLC.
25/12/09
Merry Christmas!
The Podcast is now up, so go have a look. It features footage from Peregian Originals, The Point's thoughts on Sunshine Coast Hip Hop (it's all good), and Rob Stanley's performance at The Point Party.
Rohan Nitschke is playing for 2 hours tomorrow at the Music Kafe in Brisbane.
The 2nd last Live@The Rolling Rock on January 10th has had its line-up confirmed. Idle Theory, Rob Stanley, and young guns Morning Gloree will all be performing. $5, from 7pm. Don't miss it.
23/12/09
Last Podcast for the year will go up tonight.

If you want to party hard for NYE, then head out to Kunda Park fro the All White New Year's Eve Party, featuring 7 DJs (including Ryzer and more), full light show, dancing girls and all that jazz. Tickets are $30 and you can buy them at the door. For more details check out the Gigs page.
21/12/09
Voting for Triple J's Hottest 100 has started, so let's get a Sunshine Coaster up in the top spot. A vote for Dead Letter Circus's "The Space on the Wall" will get our Luke "Licka" Williams a chance of getting the top nod this year. Let's do this. Coast musicians unite to support one of our own! Cast your vote here.
Apparently there's a free show on at the Sands Tavern on Australia Day, featuring World's Fastest, which starts at 4pm.
Rohan Nitschke's heading down to the Music Kafe in Brisbane's West End on Boxing Day, and The Point may be joining him (that is of course if we're not too full of Christmas cheer).
Don't forget, Live@The Rolling Rock this coming Sunday from 7pm. Navaho Joe, Tranzluzid, and Forms of Recreation for $5.
If you haven't checked out the review of Saturday night's Drop the Junk 2, head to the Reviews page and check it out.

Week 3
20/12/09
Great to see such fantastic local support at today's Peregian Originals. Let's hope the Council stays true to their words. Footage will feature in a later podcast.
Wingspan have put up 2 brand new songs plus a remix. The Point likes what we hear, and recommends you go have a taste too. Click here to go to Wingspan's Myspace. Have to admit, the autotune was a little overdone in the remix of Party Driven, but hey, everyone has different tastes.
The Point did not realise how much freakish talent in the Hip Hop scene there is up here on the Sunshine Coast, until experiencing the local scene at last night's Drop the Junk 2. Review up now. The gig featured The Lady Throat Killers, The Outlook with Mr Boinkin, Love Substance, Kudos, Fader'n'Trill (F.A.T.), and DJ Jah Cruz.
19/12/09
Those looking for something to do on NYE other than head to Mooloolaba and deal with all the boofheads down there, if you're into your techno there's a huge night planned in Kunda Park. The All White New Year's Eve Party is happening, with a brilliant mix of DJs including Ryzer, Cloneboy, Burntables and more. It is $30, but you get a massive show with full on lighting and the works, professional dancing girls and more (plus you get 2 free drinks to start). Sounds like a hell of a way to kick off the next decade. For more info on time, address and who's playing, head to the Gigs page.
Local punks, The Kombi Killers have scored a gig at the Jubilee Hotel in Brisbane next February, which is a benefit gig for Qpunx mag. Nice one.
18/12/09
Mic from MIA Entertainment has put on a killer line-up of shows in the coming month with the Live@The Rolling Rock events. Starting with the December 27th show featuring Navaho Joe, Tranzluzid and Forms of Recreation. In the New Year, on January 10th, don't miss Rob Stanley perform live with others TBA. And on January 24th (Australia Day long weekend - kinda), check out the State of Origin band even with NSW being represented by Simia Dei and Dawn Heist, and Technical Symplicity and Inhailed representing the home State.
Signal The Firing Squad are playing tomorrow (Saturday), along with All My Friends at Sea supporting Grace is Gone. This is a free show at the Sands Tavern.
If you're heading to Bris Vegas, Excruciate are playing with Brutal Truth and Agents of Abhorrence at the Hi Fi Bar for $12.
And if you prefer your Hip Hop to Metal, then head out to the Coolum Beach Hotel with The Lady Throat Killers and more playing from 7pm.
Local songstress, Emily Thompson has been busy in the studio again, with producer Clint Vincent (Clint contacted The Point this week to show off a new track he's produced for a Brisbane outfit... very nice), and we can't wait to hear the final product.
17/12/09
If you dig you're Aussie Hip Hop, head out to the Coolum Beach Hotel to catch The Lady Throat Killers and more from 7pm.
The Point will try to get out there, but we've also been invited to The Floating Bridges Christmas Party (at an undisclosed location), which should turn into a tribal jam by the end.
Great news about Peregian Originals, with Mayor Abbott renewing their license for 2010, though under strict traffic control guidelines. We'll take that for now. Still come out on Sunday to support the event - you may even end up on this week's podcast.
16/12/09
A little update on the progress of the much anticipated Dead Letter Circus album - Luke 'Licka' Williams, drummer for DLC has been spending the last few days laying down more drum tracks with legendary producer Forrestor Saville.
The Point welcomes Shotgun Studio to the database. Jake from Shotgun Studio has great rates and can record your live performances. Check out his profile and his recording of Coast group, Take Anthia.
I know they're not a Coast band, but the boys from Epidemic...Over play the Sands Tavern often enough. They're playing the last Uni Night of the year tomorrow night. These guys have, in the last 6 months supported Birds of Tokyo, Dead Letter Circus and more.
15/12/09
This is what The Point has been waiting to hear - Rob Stanley performing live at The Rolling Rock in Noosa on January 10th. If you don't know who Rob is yet, check out his profile AND check out this week's podcast up later in the week. You need to see this.
This Thursday night in Brisbane, there's a Sunshine Coast invasion at Rosies with Signal the Firing Squad, The Vagrant City Scandal, and Panda Panda Panda playing the new night there - Mish Mash. Looks good, will sound better. $5.
Don't forget to support the Peregian Originals in what could possibly be their last show on Sunday (if the local Council have there way... thank you very much Sea Changers). The Coast needs this fortnightly event. Be there, near the Peregian Surf Club, on SUNDAY, in the arvo.
14/12/09
Review up now of last night's Live@The Rolling Rock, featuring Fire Driver, Tranzluzid and Myrtle Place. Being there to review the gig, The Point happened to meet a few more Sunshine Coast musicians in bands that are either doing impressive things, or just starting up and ready to impress. Keep an eye on The Point for when these bands get on.

Live@The Rolling Rock this Sunday with Fire Driver, Panda Panda Panda and Tranzluzid. $5 at 7pm.
Regarding the editor's note about Peregian Originals yesterday, The Point wants to encourage the Coast music community to rally together at next Sunday's (Dec 20th) Peregian Originals to (peacefully) protest against the proposed axing of the event. The Point's aware that Rohan (Nitschke) is getting some people together and doing up signs etc, and The Point will do a podcast from the event, so let's get in, support the music community and the Peregian Originals organisers and keep this event going.
10/12/09
Note from the Editor: I like to think that I put a lot of positivity into this website, and about the Sunshine Coast music scene in general, but over the last few days, and today in particular, this issue of Peregian Originals has come up a lot on the web and in the local news. If you haven't heard, it appears that the Council's elected representative for the Peregian Area, Cr Russell Green has called for a stop for the fortnightly event.
WHAT THE F*CK!?!
It appears that (once again) the Council has given in to the complaining minority and taken away something special from THE majority. I'm absolutely fed up of hearing of these cases. A decade ago it was the Mooloolaba strip, The Sands Tavern has copped it's fair share lately, and now Peregian Originals? I don't want to point fingers, but a lot of the time it's a case of the 'sea changers' coming up here, and spoiling it for the rest of us. Peregian Originals is a fantastic event that has been organised by Jay Bishoff. This event has seen some spectacular musicians from all over the country play to appreciative crowds. Now, I would understand if it were all punk/metal/hardcore bands 'disturbing the peace', but it's not. Peregian Originals is known for hosting great folk/world/roots/blues music. How THE HELL is that offensive?
I could go on, but I digress. I don't want to have to bag the Coast Council, as they do help fund some great music events, but seriously guys, grow some balls and tell these grumpy folk that don't like the music to stick it.
Show your support, and help the Coast keep one of it's truly unique, and regular, events. Click here to sign the online petition.
Catch The Flumes at the Grinning Dog Tavern tonight, or go see Dead Letter Circus at The Sands Tavern (during Uni Night). Easy as that.

DJ Fuzzy and Technical Symplicity played a combined 21st birthday party last night out in Dunethin Rock, and The Point had a quick chat to the local DJ. Turns out he's planning a VERY big event - DJs and Bands combined in one big one-day festival. Funding is nearly sorted out, just all the paperwork and fineprint. More news on this as it happens.
