April 2010
Week 4
30/04/10
Last day of April.
Go check out Archdukes, Thievery and Birds of Prey (not The Founds as previously mentioned) tonight at Club Envy for $15. Doors open 8pm.
Raw Sounds tomorrow from 10am. Stackloads of very cool indie and roots bands playing for FREE until 4pm. Lions Park, Kings Beach. Go check the Gigs page for full line-up.
If you're heading down to Brisbane tonight, pop into the Music Kafe in West End and check out The Floating Bridges.
Here's something you may be interested in (thanks to Elliot for the info) -
"Hellooo bands and musicians :)
Starting on the Wednesday the 19th of May, 299 in Brisbane will be introducing 'Dorm Fever'.
The nights are open to every genre of band. So...one Wednesday night might be metal/hardcore night, the following Wednesday could be Hip-Hop night then Pop/punk the following Wednesday and so on...
Entry is FREE. Use of Pool tables is FREE. And drinks are going to be made cheaper :)
If your band is keen on playing at one of the Dorm Fever nights- contact Stephen Browney at info@hellenblack.com
As 'Dorm Fever' is free and going to be completely volunteer run...bands won't get paid to play. Seems like a sweet idea to me!
Face book- www.facebook.com/Hellenblack
Cheers and hope you're all having an awesome week :)
Cass xx"
Sounds like a pretty good deal. You won't get paid, but if you have merch and you're good, you should be able to make money off that instead (kind of like the good ol' days).
*Seriously go check out Thievery and Birds of Prey with the Archdukes at Club Envy tonight. I'll be heading down to Till's Bit o Bull to catch The Bella Trio do their thing, hang out with Rob Stanley and his partner Karen, and have a Southern-Fried Steak (Imagine KFC, doing steak instead of chicken.. awwww yeah), then go catch Iron Man 2 - Ed
29/04/10
Wow, a lot of emails to get through tonight.
Has anyone seen the absolute crapload of gigs coming up in May? Go have a look now on the Gigs page. No excuses for not taking in local live music in May.
Two more bands were added to The Point database tonight. Big welcome to Messiam and Georgian Ivy. Go check out their respective profiles, and have a listen to their tracks... for free. Messiam just supported Rob Stanley's CD Launch last week (Rob Stanley is actually a former member), and Georgian Ivy have a show coming up on May 14 at Kings Beach Tavern with The Kombi Killers, He-man Women Eaters, and The Intrepids ($10 at the door).
It looks like Destroy All Lines have organised that show at 240V, now called Diamond Nights. This once a month live music event is starting to look pretty impressive. The first one on June 4th will feature Confessions (Vic), with City Escape, Therefore I Am (USA), and locals Signal the Firing Squad (go check their interview with Pine Cone Throat if you're unfamiliar with this band... that interview has amassed over 1,000 views). Destroy All Lines organise the Snitch and Thriller nights down in Brisbane.
Local metallers, and one of The Point's 2010 artists to watch, Idle Theory have announced they will be touring with Embrace Eternity. Nice one, lads. Dates to come.
Tune into Noosa Community FM tomorrow from 5.30pm as Tranzluzid will be appearing live on the drive-time show.
Take Anthia have a new song from their upcoming EP, titled 'Opinions' up now on their myspace. Have a listen and be sure to check out their EP Launch at Kings Beach Tavern, next Friday the 7th of May with The Mercy Beat. Entry is $15 and it's an 18+ event.
Help support local kids, Gandalf the Grey on the Triple J Unearthed High competition. All you have to do is go listen to their tracks, review it or rate it (and download it - unless you have a Mac... for some reason JJJ doesn't like Macs... dammit). Click here to do all this now.
28/04/10
Thanks to our sister site, The Point Gold Coast (well, the facebook page anyway, since the site is not up yet), we've been alerted to some very cool Goldie bands heading our way. The Mason Rack Band will be playing May 21st at the Kawana SLSC, Bluesville Station will be playing the good ol' Palmwoods Pub on May 1 from 8pm.
Our Melbourne "correspondent", Tonksy has alerted us to a former Coaster who's coming back to play the Coolum Beach Hotel on May 22. Undertow is no stranger to the stage - under the alias DTech MC, he’s rocked the mic at drum&bass and breaks events week-in, week-out for years, touring nationally, fronting Triple J Unearthed winning live dnb/grime/electronica act Kobra Kai and MCing alongside nearly every A-list drum & bass international that has arrived in Australia. Check out a clip from Kobra Kai here. Pretty awesome stuff.
And now, believe it or not (on The Point that is), a message from Tsunami -
"Hello Music Lovers. Brand new club night for the Sunshine Coast Diamond Nights Friday June 4th, Bar 240V Mooloolaba Confession + Guests. Doors @ 8pm. first friday of each month. All i can say is that will be great for the Sunshine Coast live music scene so get out there and support it. Confessions are confirmed for the Sunshine Coasts newest monthly club event - Diamond Nights. Playing straight off the back of their sold out headline Europe/Australian tour etc etc. Main supports are TBA, but local lads Signal The Firing Squad are confirmed as openers, so expect a huge line-up."
So a once-a-month event at 240V for Live Music. You might want to support this, hey?
Don't forget, Villa Noosa has heaps of live music on, both for free and with a cover charge (depending the artists in... check the Gigs page for details). There's local bands like Good Foot, as well as touring acts such as Lisa Mitchell (only Sunshine Coast show), so take advantage of the entertainment Villa Noosa is putting up.
Want something to do on Friday night? Get down to Club Envy and check out Thievery, Archdukes, and The Founds from 8pm for $15.
Not long now till Raw Sounds. FREE LIVE music on Saturday at Lions Park, Kings Beach from 10am to 4pm. Bands such as The Floating Bridges, The Map Project, Gandalf the Grey, headliners Spacifix and more. Don't miss it.
The Floating Bridges will also be playing Club Envy on Saturday night with The Flumes and Charlie Mayfair.
Don't forget, if you're going to one of these shows and feel like expressing what you experienced, write/type/smoke signal it down and send it to editor@thepointsunshinecoast.com.au. The editor can't be at every single gig, so reviews from punters are more than appreciated.
*New shirts will be sourced soon, and will be available at selected shows, and from me directly, as well as being available online via Zazzle. Support The Point. Support local music. - Ed.
27/04/10
Thanks to all those that provided The Point with gig details today (even after our little spat on Facebook). Much appreciated.
Go check the Gigs page now for an abundance of shows.
The countdown begins for The Point Gold Coast website. The two sites will be working in conjunction with each other, which is only a good thing for the two music scenes.
Awesome band, Locavore are playing the Mansfield Tavern on May 15, as part of the Loud 10 Band Competition.
Indie kids, Dunsinane have released some new material for you to have a listen to. You can sample their new sounds on their myspace page. Click here to get there. Got a bit of a lo-fi Temper Trap thing happening there, lads.
Checked out JJJ Unearthed charts, and noticed quite a few Coast bands up there. Gandalf the Grey and Stryder in the Rock charts doing well, Myrtle Place with a track in the top 20 for Punk, Freak Morice with 2 tracks in the Pop charts, and Roots outfit Kahn ranked up to #2 earlier in the year. That's awesome.
Technical Symplicity vocalist, Wade, is laying down vocal tracks for the group's new demo, "Lights of Blinding" tonight. The Point might head down there and check it out.
26/04/10
Lazy Monday today.
For those that missed out on Rob Stanley's CD Launch, there's now plenty of footage available on YouTube, with one added by The Point late last night. You can check out the highlights of his performance here.
The Point's blog has been updated. It's a faily long read, so go grab a coffee and get a bit of a first hand experience of 2 gigs, 2 nights and 1 big grin. Click on the Blog link above.
It sounds like the show at Club Envy on Saturday night, which was raising funds for Mitch and the Dawn Chorus to go tour the US went really well. The Map Project were a part of that line-up, but if you missed that, check them out this Saturday at Raw Sounds, as they form part of a massive line-up of free bands at Lions Park, Kings Beach from 10am to 4pm.
It's been very cool to see a few The Point shirts out there. If you want to show your support for the Sunshine Coast music scene, head to our Merch page and order one online straight from the manufacturer. Huge range of styles and colours to choose from. Think of it as a Create-Your-Own The Point shirt.
With May fast approaching, go check out the swag of gigs happening next month. It's a massive month of music on the Sunshine Coast, with MIA Entertainment shows, shows at the Villa Noosa, an AA show at the Black Box, and some impressive gigs at Kings Beach Tavern.
25/04/10
What a massive 24 hours of music experienced.
Not only did The Point take in Rob Stanley's CD Launch which was off the hook, but the editor also peformed as part of Those Old Soles, then witnessed The Floating Bridges absolutely funk up the Yandina Bowls Club, all to raise funds for the Heale family. $6,000 was raised last night thanks to the community digging deep, bidding on items, and taking in great music. Hell, there was another jig done by The Point in front of The Floating Bridges during their song, 'Fire'. The Bridges even unleashed a new song, 'The Warrior', which has a bit of a Men at Work vibe to it. Very cool song.
Speaking of The Floating Bridges, they have 3 shows coming up this Friday and Saturday, with a show at the Music Kafe in West End, then as part of the fantastic Raw Sounds line-up at Lions Park, Kings Beach on Saturday (from 10am to 4pm... see the Gigs page for details), then capping it all off with a show at Club Envy.
Recording for Inhailed's upcoming album has been completed, with just mixing and mastering left to go. Looking forward to hearing it.
24/04/10
Happy belated Birthday to Holly Bree.
Huge thank you to all who came out and celebrated Rob Stanley Day at Club Envy last night. Roughly 150 people were there to witness the launch of Rob's debut CD, 'The Doorway in the Darkness', along with Templemount, Pandema and new-comers Messiam.
Rob was shredding more than ever, and a review of last night is now up on the Reviews page. Big thank you to Mic at MIA Entertainment for putting on a fantastic show, Emma Naylor for getting some tasty photos of the man at work, Rob's partner Karen for supporting him and encouraging him to do this, and for the punters for appreciating his effort (and for buying his CD, which is phenomenal by the way).
Q Music workshop is underway right now at the Black Box in Nambour, so hopefully those in attendance get something out of it and also network with seasoned professionals in the business. If anyone wants to write about their experience, send it on to the editor@thepointsunshinecoast.com.au
Two big fundraising shows tonight - The Dawn Chorus playing Club Envy with The Map Project and Kristy Mack, raising funds to help them tour the US this year. Tickets are $15 and doors open 7.30pm.
The other is a show at the good ol' Yandina Bowls Club from 5pm today, featuring members of The Floating Bridges and Those Old Soles (which means the editor of The Point is stepping out from behind the computer and bluesing it up on bass). Tickets are $25 and are raising funds to help support a family in need, who have lost their wife/mother just recently to the bastard called Cancer. It'll be a night of good vibes and good jams, for a very worthy cause.
23/04/10
The 23rd of April shall now be known as Rob Stanley Day.
New gigs have been added to the Gigs page, courtesy of Villa Noosa, who have done the most awesome of awesome... put on FREE gigs. You must take advantage of this.
Thanks to Sunshine Coast Daily for publishing the little article on Rob Stanley too (not quite the size of Bobby Flynn's article, but hey, still not too bad).
The Point Gold Coast is not far from going live online. The Point would estimate about a little over a week before the site goes live.
It appears Meat Snorkel have found another bassist in Baz. Nice work.
22/04/10
Well, the wait is nearly over. Rob Stanley's CD Launch at Club Envy is tomorrow night, and a little word of advise, get in early, as word on the street is that this just may get packed out, which would be awesome to see. This will also be Messiam's first 'big' gig, and what a way to 'debut'. Extremely looking forward to it. The Point will be there of course, with the editor busting out his very own custom Rob Stanley/The Point shirt.
If you miss out, or you want something a little mellower, The Villa Noosa is hosting Bobby Flynn (you know, one of the guys that was on that show, but this one actually had talent), supported by The Firetree.
Club Envy has been hosting some 'Help us get to tour the US' shows lately, and there's another one this Saturday night, featuring The Dawn Chorus, The Map Project, and Kristy Mack. From recollection, The Map Project (who have also been announced for the Raw Sounds festival on May 1) have a pretty damn awesome bassist/guitar/drums combo happening.
Still waiting on confirmation for this one, but there appears to be a fundraiser night on Saturday night at the good ol' Yandina Bowls Club which will feature performances from members of The Floating Bridges, Those Old Soles and more. It's to raise funds for a young family that lost their wife/mother due to cancer. Dig deep, then dig the tunes.
After this week, there's only 2 more MIA Entertainment presents shows left, with one on May 7 at Club Envy featuring Soul Legion (CD Launch), Social Anger, Inhailed, and the debut of Toxic Jungle. The other would be Mic's 40th at Kings Beach Tavern, which is looking to be a massive night featuring Idle Theory, Inhailed, Desolution (Brisbane) and the great This Collision for a rare performance.
Just a reminder to a lot of you artists on The Point to keep June 19th free, for The Point Party (unless you're going to see Strung Out at the Kings Beach Tavern instead).
*Currently listening to The Doorway in the Darkness by Rob Stanley. You'll be able to get your copy tomorrow night, or get one from Moshpit Music in Maroochydore. I got mine signed too hehe - Ed.

Week 3
21/04/10
What was with today? Must have been the weather. Come home from work to see a whole pile of emails waiting.
A whole swag of gigs have been added to the Gigs page, with some good news for you underagers out there wanting to release some aggression. The Black Box will be hosting bands such as 50 Lions, The Mistake, Thy Art is Murder, Wish for Wings, Blkout and more in coming months.
DJ Boinkin (from The Outlook and Mr Boinkin), along with Hunter Van Larkins will be supporting the most awesome Tijuana Cartel (from the Gold Coast) at Club Envy on May 8. Tickets will be $20, and doors open 7.30pm.
Kings Beach Tavern will be hosting some legends of punk performing acoustic sets at the end of May, with a local support to be announced. Again, go check the Gigs page for details.
Raw Sounds is going ahead with a new date! May 1st at the Lions Park, Kings Beach, from 10am to 4pm, for FREE you will get Spacifix, The Map Project, The Floating Bridges, Strange Few and more TBA.
The Point welcomes metal-core 5 piece, Countdown to Armageddon. These young lads have been doing some serious gigging over the last 12 months, and there's been a fair bit of talk up about them. Go see why on their profile and download their free track 'Without a Second Breath'.
Sunshine Coast/Melbourne band, Sydonia had a few words to say about their upcoming album -
"Sydonia is pleased to announce that our forthcoming self-produced single “Ocean of Storms” will be mixed by non other than Colin Richardson (Slipknot, Machine Head, Trivium, etc) of Real Productions, with Martyn ‘Ginge’ Ford from Real engineering. This may be available for your listening pleasure mid-year." The guys will be touring with Dead Letter Circus during May and June.

20/04/10
Big thanks to Renae for her review of the Kahn gig at Club Envy last Saturday night. Sounds like it was a very moving and groovin' night. You can read her review here.
Some very sudden news noted this morning on good ol' Facebook - MIA Entertainment's show on May 21st (Mic's Birthday show featuring Idle Theory, Inhailed, Desolution and This Collision) will be the last MIA show? Not sure what's happening there, but gut feeling says that Mic maybe wanting to focus on Retribution Productions (new indie label) instead. If that's the case, make sure you take in the last of his shows, starting with Rob Stanley's CD Launch this Friday at Club Envy, Soul Legion's CD Launch at Club Envy on May 7 (featuring Social Anger, Inhailed, and the debut of Toxic Jungle), and of course the May 21st show, where you can already pre-purchase tickets from various music outlets, Noosa Music, Moshpit Music in Maroochydore, or from Mic at any of the earlier shows.
Followers of The Point that are across the border and closer to Sydney town, there's a massive night of techno coming your way this Friday. I <3 Sydney Techno is on at the Sly Fox Hotel from 9pm. Why the hell am I mentioning this? Because former Coast DJ, Ryzer is on the bill (and he's damn well excited about this show too). Ryzer will be joined by Mark Craven, Kate Doherty, Typhonic, Defined by Rhythm, & Andosound. The best bit? It's FREE.
In preparation for the upcoming new EP, 'Fire' from The Floating Bridges, The Point has prepared a little promo vid for the boys. It's up on The Point blog right now.
Also, the final installment of the Homegrown Lowdown is now up. This final part features footage of Mayfair, Drawcard (before Paul decided to modify his face with his own guitar) and a full clip of Dead Letter Circus performing 'Reaction' (with random interference from a beachball). Once again, congratulations to the Homegrown/Manifest Committee for putting on an awesome festival, and stay tuned for further word on what's happening with Raw Sounds.
19/04/10
Awesome response to Peregian Originals yesterday, from both the crowd AND the weather. Very cool music to take in, and The Floating Bridges got the crowd off their butts and moving around.
Those that were trawling around on Facebook last night might have seen the first sneak peak at the new The Point Gold Coast. If you missed it, go check the The Point fanpage, it will be there under an update. Let us know your thoughts.
Not long now till Rob Stanley unleashes at his debut album launch this Friday at Club Envy, with Templemount, Pandema (Brisbane) and the debut of Messiam. Don't miss this.
The Villa Noosa is hosting Bobby Flynn, with support from The Firetree this Friday night as well.
It's the return of Those Old Soles (finally). Those Old Soles and members from The Floating Bridges and more will be playing a special fundraising event for a local family who sadly lost their wife/mother to cancer. This is a great example of the local music community banding together to help someone in need. It's this Saturday at the Yandina Bowls Club.
Have heard from Emily Thompson on news from her debut EP, and it looks like she's only waiting on the drum tracks now (which will be done by Melodyssey/Dead Letter Circus drummer, Licka).
Sunshine Coast Council’s Avenue program- APMED and Q Music are proud to announce a free full day workshop this Saturday April 24. For more info, click here to read the information sheet in PDF.
It's official. The Point Party is now set for June 19. This is an exclusive event for bands/producers/promoters only (sorry music lovers). This is The Point's chance to thank the bands for their work, and for them to mingle with artists they wouldn't normally. Once again, we will have semi-acoustic performances from selected artists, drinks and food supplied, giveaways again, and Pine Cone Throat will make a rare public appearance. Tickets are limited to 50, and invitations will go out shortly, so it will be a first in first served basis. The last The Point Party was the first solo performance for Rob Stanley, and look where he is now. Who will it be this time?
18/04/10
Peregian Originals is all go today. From 1pm behind the Peregian Surf Club, catch a whole heap of local and international talent including The Floating Bridges, and Canada's Ann Vriend, and more. FREE.
There's a review up of demo by Myrtle Place. If you like your punk angry, full of anarchy, and in your face, then read the review, then hunt down the Myrtle Place guys and ask them for a copy. Check the Reviews page for the link.
Waiting on a review for Rob Stanley's debut album. The Point has actually put this in the hands of another contributer and Rob Stanley fan, so hopefully we'll have this soon.
17/04/10
Apologies for the ever so late update, but hey, The Point needs some 'me' time too.
New blog has been posted on the experiences at Club Envy's Epidemic...Over/Fire Driver/Myrtle Place show last night. Just click on the Blog link near the header.
Bummer about Raw Sounds being postponed, but they made the right call, with all that torrential rain around Caloundra area today.
Hopefully, the rain can bugger off for tomorrow, so we can have Peregian Originals with heaps of free international and local music, including The Floating Bridges from 2pm. Just as long as those residents in Pelican St don't do any more rain dances.
The Villa Noosa has offered to supply The Point information regarding upcoming gigs, and have basically put their hand up to become THE prominent local music venue. Again, if you support them, then you will be rewarded. I do know they have Bobby Flynn playing there next week, with support from awesome former Coast band The Firetree, but also 28 Days and Behind Crimson Eyes, Butterfly Effect and Calling All Cars, these guys are getting some kick ass shows happening.
Little under a week till Rob Stanley's debut album launch at Club Envy. Spread the word, people. I think you owe it to yourselves, and to us here at The Point to be at this show. Rob does a lot for The Point as well, so go show some appreciation by witnessing his art (and buying a CD hehe... hell, get him to sign it).
16/04/10
Hell of a day, huh?
Big news - Raw Sounds which was to be held tomorrow at Kings Beach has been postponed due to bad weather. The organisers apologise for the inconvenience, and The Point has heard that the date scheluded could be May 1.
Epidemic...Over playing Club Envy tonight with local supports Fire Driver and Myrtle Place. If you're serious about supporting the heavier scene on the Coast, then you'll be there tonight.
Massive response to the topic posted on The Point Facebook fanpage today regarding the choice for local venue to cut back 'heavy' music to one show a month, on a Sunday. Though heated at first, it was great to see positive ideas being thrown around to possibly come to some solutions.
MIA Entertainment has posted some more shows on the Gigs page, and is also in talks to get into a fairly prominent Brisbane venue, taking Sunshine Coast bands to invade Brisbane. This is awesome to see.
Take Anthia and The Mercy Beat are playing Kings Beach Tavern on May 28th, but the promoter is currently looking for a support band for the 1st slot, that can draw a crowd. The band will have to be in the rock genre and be over 18. Interested? Contact The Point and we'll forward your details to the promoter in question.
It's official... the next The Point Party will be June 19. Invitations are for bands/artists/promoters/producers only, and are limited to 50, so it will be a first in first served basis. The invite is also open to The Point artists wanting to do small acoustic sets (no drums), about 10 to 15 minutes. It's a great chance to mingle with like-minded musicians, promoters and to have a good time.
15/04/10
Part 2 of the lowdown from Homegrown is now up on the Podcasts page. This episode features footage of Technical Symplicity, Torn Asunder, Dementia 13, Epidemic...Over and Rob Stanley...busking.
Speaking of Rob Stanley, he dropped off brand spankin' new debut album 'The Doorway in the Darkness' to The Point this afternoon, and it is, for lack of a better word, AWESOME. You'll be able to get your copy from Moshpit Music (available now!), or at Rob's CD launch on April 23 at Club Envy with Templemount, Pandema and Messiam.
Club Envy tomorrow night will welcome Gladstonites Epidemic...Over, supported by Fire Driver and Myrtle Place. Cracker of a night. The Epidemic...Over lads are frequent visitors to the Coast, so go have a beer with them before and after their show.
Not long now until Raw Sounds.
The Floating Bridges have got 3 shows on their plate this weekend, with a performance at Raw Sounds, then the Music Kafe in Brisbane on Saturday night, and Peregian Originals on Sunday.
Putting the call out for solo alternative acoustic performers that can pull a crowd, to support some big players coming over from the USA to play a show at Kings Beach Tavern. Can't give away who they are, but they are both from well known bands. If you think you have what it takes, email The Point with your contact details AND myspace (plus an mp3 or youtube link if you wish), and we'll put you in contact with the promoter.

Week 2
14/04/10
New label Retribution Productions is sure getting a very decent roster of artists happening. Good to see.
MIA Entertainment has been asked to put on a few shows at the Globe in Brisbane, with Idle Theory joining a Brisbane line-up (including Never Plead Guilty) on May 9, and Rob Stanley will feature on a May 16 show there too.
The Point spoke to a former member of Coast band Easy for Willis (which is sadly no more), and he has confirmed he will be drumming in a new rock outfit. More news on that when we get it.
Looking forward to May 7 at Club Envy when the Sunshine Coast finally gets to witness Toxic Jungle, at a MIA Entertainment show with Soul Legion, Social Anger, and Inhailed.
13/04/10
Peregian Originals looks to be a very cool line-up this Sunday. Canadian Ann Vriend, David Flowers Band, The Floating Bridges and more. Come on sunshine, stay good for the weekend.
Raw Sounds this Saturday as well. More free music to take in. Full line-up on the Gigs page.
Gladstonites, Epidemic...Over are returning to the Coast, so those that were impressed with their performance at Homegrown (and there were quite a few of you), come down to Club Envy on Friday night. Fire Driver and Myrtle Place will supporting. Shall be a kick arse night of music.
The Villa Noosa will be rocking out on Friday night with The He-man Woman Eaters, Georgian Ivy and Levonne from 8pm.
The Point welcomes The Secret Whisper to the band database. Go check out their profile and download their track, 'A Little Lost'. These guys and girl recently played at The Great Noosa Campout.
The Point scored a free mp3 from the High Knights today. Legendary hip hop act on the Coast (another one!), their track 'Circus' is definitely one to get your head knoddin'. They'll be playing the Villa Noosa on May 14.
Looks like Rob Stanley's stirring up a bit of interest in the music community, especially with his debut album dropping very soon (the launch is next Friday, 23rd April at Club Envy), so I'm expecting to see quite a few who's who of the local music community at the gig. Got a hunch that reps from Tsunami may just be there.
Sunshine Coast Council’s Avenue program- APMED and Q Music are proud to announce a free full day workshop on Saturday April 24.
For more info, click here to read the information sheet in PDF.
12/04/10
Not much of an update today as The Point is STILL recovering from a massive weekend.
Working on the first of 3 Homegrown Footage podcasts tonight, so hopefully will have that up later.
When you have a second, go and listen to/download Gandalf the Grey's tracks on Triple J's Unearthed High. Their songs are ranking 6 and 13 on the Unearthed High chart (and 60 on the overall chart), so go have a listen and help them to victory. The boys are part of this Saturday's Raw Sounds at Kings Beach along with many more Local artists.
Have decided to put up the press release done for Rob Stanley's album launch for everyone to see. Click here to read it.
11/04/10
The Point is recovering from a massive 36 hours. Club Envy on Friday night, Homegrown Festival all day yesterday, and then Club Envy again last night. Have spent the day reviewing footage and preparing the editing of clips. The Point will be releasing 3 episodes of footage taken from Homegrown Festival yesterday, through next week.
There is now an interview up on the Podcasts page, with Rohan (bassist from The Floating Bridges) recalling his experience at The Great Noosa Campout. Click here to go see it.
A massive congratulations to the Homegrown/Manifest committee for a job well done. Great selection of the heavier bands, new blood coming through the ranks, a return of some awesome bands, a little onstage carnage thanks to Paul from Drawcard, and a lot of new Dead Letter Circus fans.
RUMOUR HAS IT: That Dead Letter Circus want Pine Cone Throat to do an interview with them. Now THAT, will be gold.
One of the highlights of yesterday? Rob Stanley in one of the most obscure, yet awesome displays of busking, ever.
Dead Letter Circus got a great response at Club Envy last night. Review is now up on the, errr... Reviews page.
Next Saturday there's another all day event, this time at Kings Beach foreshore with Raw Sounds (sister event to Homegrown), where you'll catch plenty of Indie/Roots talent, including The Floating Bridges, Gandalf the Grey (with their new name), Spacifix, and heaps more. For details, head to the Gigs page, and remember, this event is FREE.
Fire Driver and Myrtle Place will be supporting Gladstone's Epidemic...Over next Friday night at Club Envy. Should be a great show, and those of you who caught E...O's set yesterday at Homegrown know that they are an awesome band to watch.
Two more weeks to go until Rob Stanley unleashes 'The Doorway in the Darkness' upon the world, starting with his launch at Club Envy on April 23. Don't miss it. This will be another MIA Entertainment show.
A huge thank you to The Outlook MC for his consistent plugging of The Point at Homegrown yesterday. It's very much appreciated. If you've never heard of The Outlook with Mr Boinkin before, head to their profile page on our Band Database.
It's interesting to see The Point editor get noticed at gigs lately. All you kind feedback is taken on board, and here at The Point we appreciate it ever so much.
10/04/10
It was a meaty, snorkelly affair at Club Envy last night. The Point missed out on Machine Gun Citizen, but got to witness Brisbane's Never Plead Guilty (who also won MIA Entertainment's competition to have their song ' War' used for #2 ranked Muay Thai Fighter, Chiquita Lovini-Jorgenen's theme song, to be broadcast on Fox), rip through their impressive set. Those guys and Idle Theory together on one bill would be pretty damn awesome.
Meat Snorkel did their usual, freaked out carnival rock/metal sound, but something was amiss. Not to say they weren't good, as the crowd did dig what they were doing. Maybe it was the atmosphere, maybe it was the tension built up from the previous days, hard to say.
Homegrown today! The Point will be there from the start, and hopefully will be able to give updates during the day, and will be collecting footage and interviewing bands.
Tough decision tonight - to go see Dead Letter Circus in their element at Club Envy (with Helm and Take Anthia), or go to the Verrierdale Full Moon Dance and see Dubmarine? The Point will be at one.
Met a few musicians out last night, including some of the lads from Rats Natas, and a new singer that may just be the first to be signed to new label, Retribution Productions. Not releasing her name just yet, but stay tuned.
09/04/10
Get yer butts out to see some live music this weekend.
Club Envy has MIA Entertainment presents, with Meat Snorkel, Never Plead Guilty, and Machine Gun Citizen. This will be a cracker of a show (in more ways than one). $10, doors open at 7pm. The Point will be there to get some footage, so come say g'day (and buy me a drink dammit).
Villa Noosa has The Floating Bridges doing their bridgey thing. We all know these guys are awesome, so if you feel like gettin' down tonight, head up to Noosa.
HOMEGROWN!!!! Tomorrow. 'nough said.
Tomorrow night, make a choice - Dead Letter Circus bringing their This is the Warning tour with them, featuring Helm and local lads Take Anthia, OR, head out to the Verrierdale Full Moon Dance to catch Dubmarine with all their dubby goodness - You Got Me Pointin' the BONE! (Never heard of Dubmarine? Click here to watch some footage - no, they're not a Coast band, but they're bloody awesome).
Retribution Productions (run by MIA Entertainment) now has a logo, courtesy of Rob Stanley, who's not only an awesome guitarist, but designed The Point logos and did all the artwork for his CD (he's quite an accomplished artist, with work up on redbubble.com). Check out the logo here.
The Point is aware that it has a few followers down Sydney way. If you dig your techno, Shake That Monkey is happening Saturday night, featuring former Coast DJ, Ryzer and heaps more. It's at The Burdekin in Oxford Street from 9pm.
Coming up in May is Mic from MIA Entertainment's Birthday (he's turning, like, 50 or something?! hahahaha), and he's celebrating the MIA way, with a massive line-up of metal at the Kings Beach Tavern. The night will feature The Point 2010 artists to watch, Idle Theory and Inhailed, Brisbane's Desolution, and a rare performance from This Collision. Pre-sale tickets are now available for $12 from Moshpit Music, or come and see Mic tonight at Club Envy and hit him up.
See a lot of you tomorrow at Homegrown.
08/04/10
Holy crap on a cracker. Woke up this morning and been inundated with news all over the place.
MIA Entertainment has launched a new independent record label on the Sunshine Coast, Retribution Productions. At the moment it is distribution only, but things will only go up from here.
Tranzluzid have had to drop out of the line-up for this Friday night's show at Club Envy due to illness, but Brisbane's Never Plead Guilty have come in to take their place, so it should be a kick arse show.
Had news that Meat Snorkel bassist, Huddo, had decided to leave, making Friday night his last show, but then have heard reports that he's decided to stay. Don't know what's going on there, so you better go watch Meat Snorkel on Friday night just in case.
A little report from the Morning Gloree camp on their performance last weekend -
"Hope all is well, just a quick note about the boy’s performance at the “Great Noosa Camp Out” in the emerging artist tent. A small but appreciative crowd generally made up of other emerging bands & campers awoke from their slumber to be entertained by Morning Gloree turning on an energetic show with their rapid fire “surf punk” brand of music. A positive vibe was felt by all present in the realisation that talented youth & music is alive and well on the Sunny Coast." Nice work guys.
Shake It Up Music in Nambour are having one of their massive sales on this Saturday from 9am to 3pm, so get in early, grab a bargain then head to Homegrown!
Want a job at Club Envy Maroochydore? "Casual Bar position avail, experience an advantage, must have RSA & be available between wed - sun 7pm - 3am weekly hours will vary"... good job to get a chance to watch some awesome live bands play.
The Point welcomes The Outlook with Mr Boinkin to the band database. These guys were awesome live when The Point reviewed them at Drop the Junk 2. We highly recommend you go check out their profile, download their song 'Inside Outlook', and get into those dirty, drum'n'bass hip hop grooves. Tasty.
The Point has mentioned mates, Epidemic...Over from Central QLD who like to visit the Coast quite often, and they will be part of this Saturday's Homegrown festival, but also doing a show at Club Envy on April 16 with awesome Coast band Fire Driver, and Myrtle Place.

Week 1
07/04/10
Nice to see the word of The Point getting out there. Have had a few more bands contact us this week.
Newest addition to The Point band database is Lestrange from Caloundra. These guys have a wicked, ragged rock sound, so we highly recommend you check out their profile and have a listen to their song, 'Iron Youth'. These guys will be one of many gracing the stage at the Homegrown Festival this Saturday. They are on a bit earlier, so make sure you check them out.
Some strange yet most awesome news, Rob Stanley has been added to the line-up of buskers performing at Homegrown. Most brutal busking session yet. Don't miss that.
Footage of Technical Symplicity recording their demo to 'Lights a Blinding' is now up on Youtube. You can check it out here. Jake from Shotgun Studio (who also has a profile on The Point under producers/promoters) recorded the boys in one Friday night session (with vocals to be added soon). Jake has worked with Idle Theory, Dunsinane, Panda Panda Panda, Take Anthia and more, and is also the drummer for The Vagrant City Scandal.
Big weekend of gigs coming up, starting with Friday night at Club Envy for another MIA Entertainment presents. This week, Mic has wrangled those twisted musical freaks in the form of Meat Snorkel, with Tranzluzid and Brisbane's Machine Gun Citizen. A very worthy warm-up to a huge weekend.
On the other hand, if you are after something more rootsy, then head up to the Villa Noosa to catch The Floating Bridges and more.
Then it's off to Homegrown ALL DAY on Saturday with a huge line-up of rock/metal acts (check the Gigs page for full line-up), all for FREE.
Inhailed and other awesome metal acts are hitting Infernofest at Brisbane's Stepp Inn on the Saturday night.
And to cap that off, one of the bands gaining massive momentum on the NATIONAL scene, Dead Letter Circus play Club Envy, bringing Gold Coast's Helm and local boys Take Anthia with them. The Point will get no sleep this weekend (again).
Nice to see the venues follow us too - Ed.
06/04/10
Have been alerted to another very cool band. Noosa's Good Foot are another local act to grace the stage at last weekend's The Great Noosa Campout. They should have a profile happening soon, but in the meantime, get a dose of their funky stuff at their myspace.
Starting to see a great response to The Point Gold Coast's Facebook page, and we're about halfway there in raising funds to get the site up and running. You should know what to do if you want to see this site up soon. Shane's doing a top job in getting the word out there and good to see bands supporting what he's doing.
Gandalf the Grey are running a competition to rename the band, just in time to release their EP. The name will be announced on stage at the Raw Sounds Festival at Kings Beach on April 17 (another FREE festival). All you have to do is send them via messageyour name suggestion to their facebook or myspace pages and you could win some cool merch from the band.
The guys from Gandalf have also put up a video on Youtube about the recording experience. Click here to check it.
Similarily, goremetal legends Excruciate have put up videos of them doing tracks in the studio as well. Click here and here to view them.
Will start working (finally) on a new podcast tonight, which should be uploaded tomorrow night.
05/04/10
Not the best turnout for the Club Envy show last night, but not a bad one. Big thank you to all you supporters of live music that came out. Footage of Technical Symplicity will be up later in this week's podcast (yes, we're going to do a new one, finally).
It's competition time... and this one's good. MIA Entertainment sponsors Chiquita Lovini-Jorgenen, Ranked No2 in the World in Muay Thai. They are looking for bands to put foward a song for her to walk to the ring with to hype her up. All her fights are televised by Fox Sports so here's your opportunity to get your music heard WorldWide. Email your song or contact MIA Entertainment for their address to send your CD. Contact MIA Entertainment here.
The Floating Bridges are playing Villa Noosa this Friday night, or you can catch Meat Snorkel, Tranzluzid and Machine Gun Citizen at Club Envy the same night, thanks to MIA Entertainment.
This will all be a prelude to ...
HOMEGROWN!
The yearly festival is back. Dead Letter Circus is the headliner, with Drawcard, Mayfair, Epidemic...Over (Central QLD), Technical Symplicity and more. For the full line-up head to the Gigs page. The best bit? It's FREE from 10am to 6pm at Alex Skate Park.
The Point Sunshine Coast blog has been updated today... we're starting to bring you stories of hanging with the bands before, during and after their show. Just click on the Blogs link next to the header.
04/04/10
So who's already overindulged in chocolate?
The Point welcomes young metal band, Raise the Fallen to the band database. Go check out their profile, download their mp3 Downfall, and slap yourself trying to come to the senses that these guys are aged between 12 and 15. There's so much immense talent in the younger bands like these guys, Morning Gloree and Gandalf the Grey, The Point is proud to say that the future of the music scene on the Coast is on the right path.
Thousand Needles in Red tonight at Club Envy, with St Petersburg and Technical Symplicity. Come out and get your weekly intake of hard rock, and check out Clint Boge from The Butterfly Effect's new project. Doors open 8pm.
Sounds like The Great Noosa Campout is going OFF! Young bands mentioned above, Raise the Fallen and Morning Gloree played yesterday, and I've grabbed a quote from bassist Rohan from The Floating Bridges (from his Facebook status update last night) -
"Waiting backstage to go on for the biggest gig of my life....We're going on straight after Colin Hay, from Men at work....how do you follow up to that. Sooo nervous right now.." I'm sure that the Bridges boys ripped it up last night.
Peregian Originals today at 2pm, featuring A French Butler Called Smith!!!! Plus more.
Upcoming gigs this week...
MIA Entertainment presents Meat Snorkel, Tranzluzid and Machine Gun Citizen at Club Envy on Friday, April 9th. Get down there and support this growing scene.
Or, if you don't want some weird, whacky heaviness, go to The Villa Noosa on Friday night to catch The Floating Bridges.
Seems a few of you have checked out The Point Sunshine Coast blog too. The link is now at the top of the page with the facebook and twitter links. The blog will not only feature tips, but coming soon, some more journalistic-type articles on bands on the Coast.
Looks like The Point's just made some more work for itself.
03/04/10
Huge welcome to the extra followers to The Point (and a big thanks to those that alerted you to us - keep spreading the word guys, as the bigger we get, the more exposure our fantastic music scene gets!).
The Point blog has had a facelift and been updated today, and the front page has been spruced up a little to, with links to The Point merch, our blog, our facebook page, and twitter.
Big night of music tonight. If you're not at The Great Noosa Campout (The Floating Bridges will be hitting the stage soon), then head out to Club Envy to check out Beatronica, All Strings Attached, and The Marsden Lees from 7pm for $15.
Or, the good ol' Palmwoods Hotel has Mojo Webb playing from 8pm. He's not a local, but plays he often enough, and he's downright awesome (a lot of you would have seen him at Woodford).
Thousand Needles in Red are playing tomorrow night at Club Envy, with St Petersburg (Bris) and local boys Technical Symplicity who are getting close to dropping their new demo track. When finished it will be downloadable from The Point for FREE. Go tomorrow night for a preview of which song will be released. Doors open 8pm, tix are $15.
RUMOUR HAS IT: That the new indie label destined to be opened on the Coast is very VERY close. We should have announcement of its name and who to contact next week.
7 days until Homegrown! Awesome free music at Alexandra Headlands Skate Park from 10am. Dead Letter Circus, Drawcard, Mayfair, Uncle Funk, Technical Symplicity, Dementia 13, Take Anthia and heaps more. Be there early to make sure you don't miss out on any of the bands. The Point will be there getting footage and interviewing the locals. Come and say g'day! Homegrown Festival, April 10th from 10am.
A great article was added to The Point facebook page yesterday, thanks to Dan. Looks like there's some good support to get not just one entertainment precinct on the Coast, but four. Cr Brennan has proposed we have entertainment precincts in Noosa Junction, Nambour, Maroochydore and Caloundra. Excellent idea, Councillor! Got to love the notion of preventing the Coast becoming a giant retirement village, or as Cr Brennan states, 'God's Waiting Room' (that got a bit of a chuckle out of a few of you). Click here to have a bit of a read.
Peregian Originals tomorrow! Kingfisha have cancelled, but instead we get A French Butler Called Smith!!!! Awesome. You all should know where it is, but if you don't, it's behind the surf club at Peregian, right next to the beach. 2pm.
02/04/10
Happy Easter everyone.
Apologies for the lack of updates last night, but as some of you may know, I scored free tickets to the Lions Vs Blues game at the Gabba last night, so The Point took the night off.
The Point would like to take a moment and reflect over what has happened over the last month...
Some copycat 'sites' have emerged, which is annoying, but at the same time, helps all you artists out there, but it is nice to see the loyalty a lot of you have shown to The Point. If you feel like spreading the word on facebook, by all means do so, we appreciate it.
Quite a bit of a sh*tstorm arose with a local venue stating that they were looking at not putting on supporting the metal scene on the Coast as much due to the actions of a few at a show, but thanks to much better behaved crowd 2 nights later, faith was restored, and things smoothed over.
A young band that shall remain nameless on this site decided to try and act out retribution for being dumped from 2 shows due to poor behaviour and lack of respect. Not cool. Music detectives were quick on the scene to track down the culprits, resulting in the band being blacklisted from organisations, and the majority of venues/promoters (and quite a few bands) will not work with this band again. The Point likes to support the local scene and bands, but has withdrawn any support and mentioning of them.
The Point announced that, due to request, would start up a smaller, sister site - The Point Gold Coast. This was met with an enthusiastic response, so we take it that you liked that. It's only a facebook page at the moment, but a template design is in the works.
Rob Stanley announced his CD launch for his debut effot 'The Doorway in the Darkness' will be at Club Envy on April 23.
The Homegrown and Raw Sounds line-ups were finally announced, with many of you getting quite excited about the bands appearing (did someone mention Dead Letter Circus... for free??). Full line-ups and dates on the Gigs page.
And... The Point finally hit the 1,000+ hits per month goal (actually going over the goal), with the editor doing, as promised, the jig which was filmed and put up on Youtube (with special appearances from Pine Cone Throat and Rob Stanley).
Ok, now for today's news.
The Great Noosa Campout kicks off today, and continues until Sunday. Huge amount of local and National acts appearing (with the biggest day being tomorrow). Go to www.thegreatnoosacampout.com for the program guide.
Morning Gloree were a late announcement to the 3-day event, and were put on the Sunday schedule, but we have been informed that they are now appearing at 11am tomorrow, for the early risers.
For those not going to the Campout, but still want some groove fix, head out to Club Envy tonight for Beatronica, All Strings Attached, and The Marsden Lees from 7pm for $15.
Carlapalooza is tonight at Shed 5 on the Gold Coast, featuring Sunshine Coast punks, The Kombi Killers. This is a fundraiser event, and has proven to be very popular.
Sunday night, for those itching for a bit of heaviness, definitely head out to Club Envy to catch Thousand Needles in Red (Clint Boge from The Butterfly Effect's new project) as they tour they way up and down the East Coast. These guys put a bit more grunt and a different approach behind Clint's vocals. When they played the Villa Noosa earlier in March, they almost sold it out, so get in quick on Sunday to get your tickets. Local lads Technical Symplicity (who are about to release a brand new downloadable demo track in the coming weeks) and Brisbane's St Petersburg are supporting. Doors open 8pm.
Mic from MIA Entertainment was kind enough to bring The Secret Whisper to our attention here at The Point. Nice feminine vocals with a bit of oomph behind it. They are on the line-up for The Great Noosa Campout as well (check them out on Sunday at 11am).
RUMOUR HAS IT: That new venue Club Envy may be up for sale. Anyone interesting in helping to keep the momentum going and have a crack at really making a difference on the scene?
Local Hip Hop outfit High Knights are playing a special one-off performance at Villa Noosa on May 14. These guys played last years Ripe Noosa, as well as UTribe. Another great example of the phenomenal amount of Hip Hop talent we have on the Sunshine Coast. Become a fan of theirs on Facebook here and also check out their Myspace page. Currently listening the track 'Let Go' repeatidly.
Looking for last month's news? It's in the news archives (the link is at the bottom of this page).
