November 2011

28/11/11

Well done to those paying attention this morning. The Point, in conjunction with SolBar, gave away a double pass to Cheap Fakes and Kindread on Friday night. The lucky winner was Shelly Munson. Stay tuned next week when we give away another double pass.
Coming up this week, The Snowdroppers drop in (pun fully intended), with support from Transvaal Diamond Syndicate and The Blackwater Fever on Thursday night at SolBar.
That same night, a new Open Mic night starts up thanks to Deb and her Circle of Sounds. The new venue is the Duporth Tavern from 8pm (however there are $2 Tacos and $4 Buritos before that between 6pm and 8pm).
Rikochetz have another big show coming up this Saturday at the Commercial Hotel in Nambour with Phantom Lighter Thieves, Ignite the Chamber, and in their last show on the Coast for the year, Messiam. Doors at 9pm and it's $10 entry.
The Point would like to give a huge shout out to Sharna from Sunny Coast Youth Partnership and Book-a-Band Direct. She's done (and continues to do) a stellar job with the events (mainly for youth, too) this year. Had great feedback about the Metal Meltdown event at Tickle Park yesterday, and we just thought Sharna's work deserves plenty of acknowledgement. Our hats off to you, Miss.

26/11/11

Sunday has plenty to offer. If you want a metal fix, then head to Tickle Park in Coolum tomorrow from 2pm to see the best of the new blood of metal bands from our area. Bury the Existence, Countdown to Armageddon, What She Deserves, Asteya, and Mayfair all feature at this free All Ages event.
Likewise in Nambour, it's another Nambour Originals with an awesome line-up featuring Pocketlove, Lucy & Jade, His Merry Men and more from 1pm.
Kindread are back from a small break this week coming, starting with a show at SolBar with Cheap Fakes. The Point, in conjunction with SolBar will be giving away one double pass to this show. Stay tuned as we'll be posting a question during the week. First one to answer scores the double pass.
The Point will be sneaking off to check out The Snowdroppers on Thursday night at SolBar, supported by one of our favourite Brisbane acts, Transvaal Diamond Syndicate, as well as former Coasters, The Blackwater Fever.
It's getting close to the end of the year, and so it's time to reflect on the great releases that our bands put out in the last 12 months. We have our favourites (kind of) picked, but we want to know your thoughts too. What was you favourite local release for 2011?
Leave a message on our Facebook page.

24/11/11

Big weekend coming up, folks. Check the gigs guide.
Kings Beach Tavern plays host to British India tomorrow night, with support from the Stryder lads, and The Secret Whisper.
Speaking of The Secret Whisper, their filmclip to 'Remember When' has just been picked up by Channel [V]. Nice work.
The Coast is killing it at the moment. The Secret Whisper being picked up by [V], The Mank on the home page of JJJ Unearthed's website, The Floating Bridges and Cleveland Blues both on their respective tours, the Rikochetz team bringing some tasty metal/hardcore bands here as well as our own heavier bands mixing it up... it's all happening.
Fans of heavier music get ready for December 10th as there is an All Ages show in Nambour you may want to mark down on your calender (folks still have calenders, yeah?). Sienna Skies are coming, and are bringing Built on Secrets and Sound of Seasons with them. These bands will be supported by Armada in the Dusk, Mindset (Vic), Down from the Sky, and Raise the Fallen. Bloody hell... that's a big line-up for $15 at the QCWA Hall in Nambour. Get the word out there.
Some very cool news... The Point Sunshine Coast, in conjunction with those legends at SolBar will be giving away a double pass each week to one of the weekend shows. Keep your eyes to the screen and fingers to the keyboard, as we'll throw a question at you and the first one to answer correctly will receive a double pass (well, actually... this is even better... you'll be on the door list for that chosen night... kinda makes you feel like a 'rockstar', if we can borrow from the Birch Carroll & Coyle advertising thingy). We'll kick this off next week, with a double pass to Cheap Fakes and Kindread to give away... you'll never know when we'll strike.

22/11/11

So... we'll try and avoid our bitch at our disgusting we think big music business is with the conclusion of x-factor for a year... and instead remind you to save up that frustration...hold it... hold it... and unleash on Sunday at Metal Meltdown at Tickle Park from 2pm. Big line-up of talented as f*ck metal kids that will brutalise your eardrums and tendorise your grey matter into a pulpy mess. Sounds good, right? Asteya, Bury the Existence, What She Deserves, Countdown to Armageddon, and the old dudes in Mayfair (well... older than the other bands playing, so we'll say, 'more experienced'). Seriously though, if you're an All-Ager and want a tasty slab of metal, then Tickle Park on Sunday from 2pm is your place.
On the other side... if you want something a bit mellower, a bit funkier, and still damn talented, Nambour Originals has a seriously fantastic line-up featuring His Merry Men, Pocketlove, Lucy & Jade, Maddy Zammit, and Andrew Redford. It's all from 1pm at Quota Park in Nambour. Bring a blanket and some spare coins for the ol' donations tin.
We're seriously looking forward to receiving Brett Orr's debut album for a bit of a test spin here at Point HQ. His soulful grooves have been a favourite here.
Speaking of test spins, the lovely Tahnee Sarah was kind enough to give us a sneak peek of her new track tonight as well. Yup. We liked it.
Don't forget...it's Wednesday biatches... so Open Mic Sesh at SolBar is in order.

21/11/11

That was a huge weekend. Congratulations to the Golden Days organisers who have now put on a festival that is up there with the best in the Nation, and it's in our own backyard. We had frequent updates from our own Roh with how good the day was, how awesome the the crowds were, and how the local bands really did stand up with the touring acts.
How's this for F*CKING AWESOME? The Mank on the homepage of Unearthed.com. Click here for a screenshot. The Mank are rocketing up the charts, joining our Floating Bridges boys up there. Nice work!.
The Floating Bridges boys are off down south from this Thursday on a hefty two-three week tour. You'll see them again when they come home to play SolBar on the 10th of Dec supporting USA's Fish out of Water.
This weekend at Coolum's Tickle Park, get your metal AA fix with Metal Meltdown happening from 2pm. Free Entry too. Full line-up, click on the poster.
Dead Frogs are now streaming their album for your listening pleasure. Check out their hardcore/sludge (or as we put it, frogcore) sound here.

19/11/11

Golden Days is here. Enjoy, folks. So many excellent bands on the bill, National and local (don't forget to get in and support the local bands playing).
Peregian Originals has a huge line-up this Sunday, with Mitch Davis, Jabaru, Pocket Love, and His Merry Men all there for your musical pleasure. We dare you to try and sit still when Pocket Love and His Merry Men do their sets... bet you can't.
Guineafowl are at SolBar tonight. Go see what these indie wunderkinds are all about.
Kings Beach Tavern plays host to Blonde on Blonde, who will be supported by Cherry Dove and locals Hope Springs.
We've added Hope Springs' profile to the band database, so go check them out.
We've also just added the most awesome, Carl Wockner, to the band database (though we're still waiting for the full bio). Have a listen to his track, Pictures. So damn smooth.
In Nambour tonight, Inhailed are going to brutalise, tendorise, and serve up a slab of meaty metal goodness, along with Afraid of Heights and Chriss Timms. It's $10 and starts at 9pm.

17/11/11

Who's ready for Golden Days? Hmm? Cruel Sea? Xavier Rudd? Beautiful Girls? The Floating Bridges? Cleveland Blues? Heaps heaps more? Well it's this Saturday and by all accounts, it should be one huge festival for our little area.
SolBar's got a treat for you music lovers tonight. Triple J darling, Emma Louise is playing tonight, with support from Charlie Mayfair and Kate Martin. Tomorrow night catch didgeridoo virtuoso Ganga Giri, then on Saturday night, head out to SolBar for Guineafowl's indie goodness.
Rikochetz Events have a massive show this Saturday at the Commercial Hotel in Nambour with local shredders Inhailed headlining, with support from WA's Afraid of Heights, and Chriss Timms (hell, if Mr Rob Stanley talks about Chriss Timms, we take his word for it).
Hope Springs play the Kings Beach Tavern on Saturday night, supporting Blonde on Blonde. They'll be joined by Cherry Dove.
Check out Hope Springs track, 'Asleep in Thought' here.
We'll be working on the Gig guide today/tomorrow, so if there are gigs we are missing, send them on through to us either via our Facebook page, or to editor@thepointsunshinecoast.com.au

14/11/11

So it turns out our boys in The Floating Bridges are now #1 on the JJJ Unearthed Roots charts with 'Foreign Land', and #22 overall. And only after a week after its release.
For those that didn't know, there's this little event called Golden Days happening this weekend. Nothing too much, just artists like Xavier Rudd, The Cruel Sea, The Beautiful Girls, The Floating Bridges, Cleveland Blues and heaps, heaps more. There's still a few tickets left (@$75 a pop), but they're selling out fast.
Rikochetz are bringing Inhailed back to Nambour town this Saturday night at the Commercial Hotel, with Afraid of Heights and Chriss Timms along for the ride. This kicks off at 9pm, and is an 18+ event.
Congrats to Lucy and Jade for taking out the Acoustic Sessions band comp at the Kings Beach Tavern last Friday night. If you're yet to see these two in action, they do frequent the Open Mic Night sessions at SolBar on Wednesdays, so you may be lucky enough to catch them there.
Happy Birthdays to Point co-creator Rohan (for yesterday) and to mini-Pointster Lilliahna.

12/11/11

Come together, party people!
Big night tonight.
Solbar plays host to one of The Point's favourite adopted bands, Dubmarine tonight, with support Darky Roots. It's $20 on the door, and it will sell out fast, so be an early bird.
It's time again for another Full Moon Dance at Verrierdale Hall, with the event hosting Deya Dova, The Strides and Barry Charles tonight. If you're unsure where it is, head up the Bruce Highway, take the Eumundi exit, get on the road to Noosa, and half-way long on the right hand side you'll see a sign for the Full Moon Dance and Verrierdale Hall. Follow that road all along until you see the hall with the pretty lights.
The Mary River Festival is in full swing, with our boys The Floating Bridges headlining the event.
Tomorrow is Nambour Originals with T M Gallop, Eli Wolf, Ange Takats and more for free from 1pm. Remember to donate to keep the event alive.
Also check out Buderim Tav Sunday Sessions with this Sunday featuring Kelsie Rimmer, Adam Scriven, and The Mank.
We've had some new music come our way this week. The Electro Kid's new EP, 'Stargazing' has been getting a flogging here at Point HQ. We reviewed it on Friday morning, so check it out here.
Also, Hope Springs have popped up on our radar. We'll have their profile up soon, but while we do that keep this date in mind - November 19 at the Kings Beach Tav - Hope Springs, Blonde on Blonde and Cherry Dove.
Have a great Saturday night folks, take in the great music that is on this weekend, and we'll be back on Monday.

10/11/11

Massive thank you to the TAFE Music Department for the invite to the Music Industry Showcase last night. Witnessing the next gen of artists coming through was really something. The guy playing the fiddle/violin (sorry mate, forgot your name)... you tore it up. You better be in a band, or composing or something because you, sir, shred. The Afterglow boys definitely impressed. The lo-fi drum'n'bass treat towards the end was really something. All of you music students were amazing. Keep it up.
King Cannons at SolBar tonight. If you dig styles like The Gaslight Anthem, old Bruce Springsteen, even old Living End, you'll dig these guys. They're playing with Jackson Firebird, and The Strums.
Looks like the Coast is launching another attack on Unearthed.com with new releases by The Mank, Kudos, and The Floating Bridges.
Click on their respective links and get our bands noticed! The Point picks would be Mr Bossman by The Mank, iRap by Kudos, and The Floating Bridges' Foreign Land (though that's the only one they have up anyway). Also check bands like Kindread, Rivalry, The Electro Kid, Messiam, the list goes on.
Hey Geronimo at SolBar tomorrow night, then it's time to get all dubbified as the mighty Dubmarine surfaces at the SolBar on Saturday night with Darky Roots.

08/11/11

Open Mic night tomorrow night at SolBar. You'll never know what you'll discover at one of these.
The Point is heading to the TAFE Music Industry showcase tomorrow night to check out the new blood. Looking forward to seeing what the students have to offer.
The Full Moon Dance is coming up this weekend, with an impressive line-up featuring Deya Dova, The Strides, and Barry Charles. If you've never been to one of these, you owe it to yourself to head to the Verrierdale Hall and taste what's on offer. It'll be one of the best musical experiences you can get in our beautiful area.
One of The Point's adopted bands, Dubmarine are back this weekend, popping their SolBar cherry while launching a new single too. They're bringing Darky Roots with them for extra flavour. This will be a massive night of dancing, sweating, stomping, and good vibes. There's a reason why we've taken this band in... go see why on Saturday night at SolBar.
Mightily impressed with Messiam's Brad with his interview with The Metal Review. Read it here.

07/11/11

Big week coming up.
Well done to the Rikochetz Crew for their efforts on Turn of the Tide Festival. Now if only MORE would support such events, the heavier music would be sitting pretty.
We checked out the J's 5th Birthday celebrations last Saturday night and managed to sneak in a glimpse of Sahara Beck's set, as well as The Secret Whisper's set. We love watching this artists mature and their songwriting and performances improve in leaps and bounds. Awesome stuff.
We've heard through the grapevine that Spiralsiren are back jamming again. Can't actually wait to hear the full band in motion.
Happy Birthday to Minor Elite's Wade, who managed to discover an awesome birthday gift... they're being checked out by Roadrunner Records currently. Want proof? Click here.
The gig guide has been updated. There's some very cool artists coming our way, including The Snowdroppers, Dubmarine (this Saturday), Emma Louise and more. Check the gigs page for details.
The Point will be heading to TAFE on Wednesday night to check out a showcase performance by graduating music industry students. Very keen to see what has been produced.

04/11/11

So who caught the debut of The Secret Whisper's new filmclip to their track 'Remember When'? If you missed it, click here and go watch it. We're digging it.
The Point wishes Mr Brett Orr the best of luck with his Album Launch tonight. It should be a massive night of funkilicious grooves with special guests galore. Hell, Mr Orr has even managed to score DJ Katch (Resin Dogs) as a support act.
Metalheads, rejoice! Turn of the Tide Festival is nearly here. A big tasty slab of brutality will be served up in All Ages goodness in Caloundra tomorrow. If you like it loud, heavy, fast and chunky, then get your butts to the Caloundra Community Hall tomorrow from 2pm.
The Point will be heading up to Noosa's The J tomorrow afternoon to help celebrate their 5th Birthday with the likes of The Floating Bridges, The Secret Whisper, The Dave Flower Band, Alys Longmate, Sahara Beck and more. Best thing? It's FREEEEEEEEE.
Who's checked out the cool stuff at Controversial yet? Need a new pair of sunnies? Check. Need some new cool threads? Check. Need a new skatie with awesome designs? Check. Want to support a couple of awesome local ladies with massive passion (and who also support the local music scene)? Click the banner at the top to head to Controversial's page.
We received a very cool invite here at Point HQ to go attend the Music Industry Showcase next week for TAFE Students. Phenomenal amount of young talent will be on show, so we're going to go check it out (and feel all special-like because we got invited and stuff).

01/11/11

Rumour has it that Minor Elite are in the studio at the moment, recording the follow-up to their debut album released at the beginning of the year. (Actually not really a rumour... can't help but notice when you're getting bombarded with updates on their shenanigans in the studio... nice work guys!).
That master of riffery, Rob Stanley has been plugging his new track, 'Acres', and we've been taking notice. Have you? We think you should. It's pretty bloody epic. Check it out here.
Big Birthday celebrations for Noosa's The J this Saturday with a massive line-up of artists FOR FREEEEE. Get a healthy dose of The Floating Bridges before they disappear South on tour, as well as The Secret Whisper, The Dave Flowers Band, Alys Longmate and Sahara Beck from 5pm.
Another very talented Rob, Mr McErvale emailed through a little gift to The Point HQ, with a tasty little blues track he wrote for us. It did make us feel a little warm and fuzzy. We'll share it soon enough.
Don't forget there's some wicked gigs at the SolBar coming up this week with Grand Atlantic supported by Cleveland Blues, and Brett Orr's hugely grand Album Launch on Friday night. (Thought we better mention that Dubmarine are coming back too... November 12th... oh yeah!).
And did we notice something on the Facetwitter that The Bea7nix are working on a new mashup? Please let it be so. We dig that sh*t.
